Beings it was raining today and we couldnt finish our yardwork -- ( Sad ) , we decided to go up to Spirit Lake and check the fish out in the Hatchery. Its full of Muskies and some Walleyes. They had a fantastic year of netting Eyes , so there are millions and millions of eggs up there. Here are a few pics.

Some of the Walleyes

Here is a shot of some of the many jars of incubating Walleye eggs. When they hatch , they swim to the top of the jar and are "washed" to a a holding tank.

Northerns anyone ??? 8.6 million eggs harvested and 6 million hatched !!! Very cute little farts

It was a very fun and interesting trip. Those guys and gals work VERY HARD this time of year so we can enjoy fishing for many years to come.

Never been to the hatchery up at Spirit. I do stop by at least one of the trout hatcheries up in Northeast Iowa every time we go up there. I will have to stop into Spirits this summer when we go up for a few days.

Very cool! That's a lot of eggs. Let's hope many of them make it through the stocking. I have heard, do to the budget problems they are not able to let them grow in their controled environment as long. So more fry than fingerlings are getting stocked. It is quite exspensive to run a facility like that. You try feeding 6,000,000 kids!

Don't suppose the wife would believe we were going up there to do some research or something and just taking some fishing poles with us "in case" ???

Very cool Kent, I've never been to our fish hatchery around this time of year, maybe have to check it out this week, see what they got.

The Fairport hatchery does Bass, Bluegill and I think some walleye. We took a trip out there in high school, it's pretty cool place.

The brood stock of bass are some lunkers!

They are a cool place. I have been to the trout hatcheries several times , but those big Skis and Eyes make the Spirit hatchery awesome.

I did a job shadow out there when i was in high school, we drained a pond down and collected all the brood bass right before spawn and moved them to a spawning pond. And they were Lunkers!

I was there a long time ago as a kid while visiting my aunt in Spencer. May have to make a return trip there again one of these times.
