DES MOINES - As Iowa gears up for Free Fishing Weekend, June 6-8, families can get hooked on the benefits of reducing stress and spending time together while fishing.
"Iowa is home to more than 300 lakes and more than 10,000 miles of fishable streams, providing plenty of fishing opportunities," says Marion Conover, DNR Fisheries bureau chief. "And for beginners, Free Fishing Weekend could be just the time to learn more about the sport as the DNR and other organizations host dozens of clinics and events across the state."
Fishing is a known stress reliever, and spending time outdoors is an excellent way to encourage a healthy lifestyle in your family. In a recent survey conducted by the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, 88 percent of anglers listed "relaxing" as the number one benefit of fishing and 70 percent listed "reduced tension" as the second greatest benefit.
Additionally, a higher percentage of anglers said they had good relationships with their children, are happily married, feel fit and healthy, and are satisfied with life, than the general population.
"When you get a fishing pole in your hand, the only thing to worry about is where to cast and what bait to use," said Conover. "Everything else can go away for a little while."
Plenty of opportunities to learn more about fishing and how to hook one on are available across Iowa this weekend, June 6-8, which is Free Fishing Weekend for Iowa residents.
Two major events hosted by the DNR will occur on June 7 at George Wyth State Park in Waterloo, and at Cedar Lake in Cedar Rapids, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fishing experts will be on hand with suggestions for the best 'family friendly' places to fish, equipment and bait recommendations, and more. First 150 visitors get a free hot dog and chips. Everyone receives a goody bag with bobbers, fishing tackle and helpful information. Other major prizes also will be given away.
Other fishing clinics hosted by county conservation boards and other organization will take place in the following counties: Buena Vista, Cerro Gordo, Crawford, Dallas, Davis, Des Moines, Fayette, Hancock, Harrison, Howard, Jasper, Jefferson, Jones, Linn, Lyon, O'Brien, Page, Pottawattamie, Sac, Scott, Story, Taylor, Wapello and Woodbury. A listing of complete details on these clinics and other fishing events can be viewed at:

This is something that we all don't think about much since we all obviously are into fishing very much and don't need things like free fishing weekends and such but just thought it is something to bring up if anyone is heading out and may want to try and get someone new into the outdoors. This would be a good weekend to do so. _________________ Randy Ellison

| It is actually amazing how many people will take advantage of that free fishing weekend. I am not sure how that one person that goes out that one weekend and tries to show their kid how to fish is accomplishing much. That is why it is much more important for people like us that fish regularly (or constantly in Randys case ) to take those kids out and show them a good time and how things are done correctly. As you all know, if you do things right, you will have much more success. |

| Another thing I'll add to that and it comes from a different angle...
You may want to consider where you are fishing also on those days. I'll use MacBride for example, the banks were packed fisherpeople on Memorial day, I could just imagine what this weekend will be like.
I know most people have boats but if you're on a basically electric only lake, going around all the people can take a long time. Most places shouldn't be a problem. And I don't have anything against bank fisherman, I just try to keep my distance as to not disturb them since they aren't as mobile.
Most lake this wouldn't be a problem... _________________

Yes, I have to agree MacBride will be a zoo or any place that has good bank access. I have nothing against bank fisherpeople they have just as much right as any one. I do have a slight problem with the people that go out once a year ONLY because it is free. The idea is to get these people interested in taking their kids out(who do not need a license anyway) and try to teach them how to fish. If these people would actually buy a license all the fisheries would be better off. Hopefully at least a few will get interested enough and buy a license. Unfortunately (licenses) is the major funding for the DNR which the state legislators can not touch. _________________ When the fish get tough the tough get fishing! |

| I have a feeling all the local rivers, basically in southern Iowa anyway, are not even going to be fishable by this weekend. They will all be trying to fish the various lakes and many of them are going to be looking like chocolate milk. I just heard that the res may exceed 93 levels. You heard anything about that, Dave? _________________ Rookie Lake Q fishrman keepfishn4fun |

The res is definately up there, but the Iowa river below is already out of it's banks. Dubuque st. near City park and Mayflower apt. is closed on one side and they had to sandbag the underground parking area. The Corp. is going to let out some water at 12,000cfm at 8 AM. Hard to say if it will do any good. The news last night showed the water only a foot or less below the spillway..Yikes. Could happen again and more rain on the way! _________________ When the fish get tough the tough get fishing! |
