| John,do I have to tell? Most guys I see fish tubes are using a jig from 1/8th to 1/4.I have some friends that are very good bass anglers that fish this way.They run the hook of the jig through tube,but hook is exposed of course.I never fish my tubes this way.I use very small 1/16th oz. internal tube jig that sets inside tube completely when rigged right,thus making it weedless.The problem for most guys is that they just can't fish slow enough to fish it right.I've caught 1000's of bass,my boys do well with this rig also,and we've never had a hook break using this type of rig.But again,SLOW as it takes a long time for this type of rig to fall in water over 10+ deep.I've caught smallies with it in 20' of water.

I use to use tube jigs when rigging tubes, but not anymore. Since I use then mostly for bass,large and small. I use a 3 or 4/0 hook and rig texas style. I like to use a bullet steel weight usually 1/8 and sometimes 3/16oz. The reason I use the steel is that the bas eof the weight is larger and a little more concave so it fits the top of the tube like a jig head. Also I texas rig the tube bringing a wide gap( Mustad ultrapoint makes one for tubes that the hook tip sits flat on top of the bait) hook all the way through then skin hooking it on the top side this allows it to be weedless and come out clean for a good hookset. In most applications I also peg the sinker so it will stay secure to the top of the tube. This allows the tube to dart back and forth on the retreive. And as Ryan said slow is the key although I have caught plenty of fish using a faster retreive, hopping the tube and shaking the pole tip for action. I also put a rattle in my tubes. I like the glass rattles made by RC tackle http://rctackle.com/Rattle.asp They are very loud. I like the single bead with the flange. They also make great swimjigs,spinnerbaits and tubes..ect. |

| Sooo, Ryan, you are just letting the fish expose the hook when they bite? I mean, you aren't even skin hooking the barb? As a finesse guy, I am interested in this technique. I would even go to a 32nd if I could. Manufacturers are getting better with the smaller stuff, finally. |

Basshawk,enjoyed your thoughts on your rigging options on tubes.We've used the larger offset hooks at times also,but I prefer the internal jigs for our clear water lakes.

Clear water is something we only worry about in the spring around here before the algae bloom. Except for a few that stay pretty clear most of the year. I also have to say that "clear" is a relative word. It could mean 10 ft. or 1ft. Just depends on the body of water  |

| Excellent article! Makes me want to get on the water and try it. I really like the idea of the variety of different fish that would bite on those little things.
