| Yep, its that time of year for me. I always get this urge to get the wheeler out and go tear around with it for a few weeks between open water and ice starting. So Sunday and yesterday evenings we went down and did some riding on the old trails. Wasn't sure what we would find since really no one had road them all year and there was a lot of flooding of that creek all summer. Amazingly enough things were not in too bad of shape and I only got stuck twice trying to go thru stupid mud. Neither of which we had to winch out so it wasn't too bad. Always good times, I love blasting down a shallow azz creek bed from sand bar to sand bar hoping you don't cross that deep water hole. :drv: Pic of Collin just chillin at one of the creek crossings. Won't be long and it will be time for the snow plow and tire studs. For now though I'll sling some mud with it for a few weeks. _________________ Randy Ellison

| That would be a blast! I never have really done any trail riding before. Just use the ATV for plowin, huntin, and fishin. A friend of mine was telling me about a big ATV park down by Columbia Missouri that they used to go to. We've talked about going, just haven't found the time.
Pretty soon those boys will have to have their own wheelers! |

Trail riding is a lot of fun. It gives you a true feeling for what these machines can really do. Its pretty amazing really. Today's atv's are beasts. They can go thru, over, or around about anything if you take a little time and logically think about an obsticle. Funnest part about riding to me is the technical stuff. I'd much rather climb my atv over a giant rock or log jamb relying on tow straps and the winch to keep it from flipping and things like that rather than to climb up the steepest most giant hill you can find, all the while right on the raggid edge of flipping it and having it in your lap. I have never flipped an atv going up a hill, I have been riding a wheelie when I got to the top and been really close a few times but I have never actually flipped it. I don't plan on that changing any time soon. I'll take an hour to find an alternate route if it looks unsafe.
However it must be the boater in me or something cause I'll always be the first fool to go blasting off into the creek crossing that ends up being 3' deep and shallows up most of me and the machine.
We have a huge area to ride and that makes it nice. Most people have no where to ride, that is the biggest drawback to an atv. Iowa is not atv friendly by any means either. Lake Rathbun has an area you can ride and Coralville does too but other than that there isn't anything public to ride in this part of the state. I have heard the Rathbun area trails are pretty low key too and you could drive your family car down most of them and not be challenged. That's not atv riding for me. You can do that just by riding down a gravel road.
Invitation is always open down here. Biggest problem is planing a ride. Usually they all end up spur of the moment and 15 minutes after we decide to go ride we are riding. Not much planning involved and with a major creek crossing to enter the property if the water in the creek is too high then most of the land is off limits. We have tried to cross a few times when the water is up and the current is swift but when the sand gets soft you can loose a quad fast so we have learned our lessons the hard way. My quad has went swimming a couple times. _________________ Randy Ellison

| We used to have some areas to ride around here, it was always a blast. There was a big place up by Solon, but I haven't heard much about it lately, it may be closed down. _________________ ........Be The Jig........

It used to be called 600 Acres and was open year round. I am not sure but I think the county owns it now and renamed it, which ecscapes me at the moment. I know it is open now. Could be a lot of the area is a flood plain and the Res was up for most of the summer, so they are just opening it up again. |
