    Hey all,

Man, we used to talk about nascar a little at least. Not so much any more.

Its still a sporting event to watch or nap to since football is over. Cars will be on the track for daytona 500 practice and shootout practice this afternoon and evening so if anyone wants to see some cars on the track for the first time this year speed channel is where its at.

I tuned back to Speed last night for the first time to watch all the media day crap. I still enjoy me some racing even if maybe not like I once did. Jr seemed pretty happy and upbeat yesterday and joking around and I haven't seen that out of him for the last few years, so who knows, maybe he is gonna go out and win something this year.

Add in a new points system, new car design, new chase format and it might just be a season worth watching.

Sooooo, anyone else out there thinkin about the nascar bug?

NASCAR has to figure out how to get the casual fan like me back.

I sorta started to get into it but I think it's boring anymore. Too many weird endings. It's all "engineering" and I can't tell a Ford from a Dodge. The tracks all look the same. I have no idea who the best driver is and new teams don't have a chance of even getting started. Seems to go on who will spend the most money to win or get the best NASA guy in their shop.

Imagine the cool cars they could have with the Camaros', Mustangs and Challenger's all back again.

And Toyota but not Pontiac?. Uh, well uh I guess maybe they oughta run some Hyundai's too.

I would agree. However, that is no different than any form of motor sports and sports in general. The Yankee's wouldn't have so many World Championships if they were not willing to spend more than the next guy to have the super team.

Right now I'd say its safe to say Kyle Busch is the best driver in Nascar IMO. However Jimmy Johnson has the best team. If Kyle Busch could put together a team like Jimmy's than we all just as well quit watching cause the outcome would be the same every week. Another Kyle Busch win. This from a person that is not a fan of the man at all. Whether you hate him or not does not change a thing, kid flat out drives harder than anyone else on the track and if he had the crew to back him up everyone else would look like fools out there while he ran circles around them.

So I know what your saying about the money, I just don't see where that is different than any sport. Even fishing for that matter. You think Brody of the Lake has all the tools financially that KVD does? I think not, I don't even think Tommy Biffle has all the financial tools Kevin does, but that doesn't mean they don't show up each week still hoping to beat him. Some weeks they even do.

I don't think nascar will ever drag in the casual fan again. I think they did for a while cause it was growing so fast that everyone thought they wanted to be a nascar fan. Not that many of them knew a lot about it or motor sports in general.
I suppose the boringness is part of it, however, every sport is boring until the end. Why not just play a 5 minute super bowl, or a 1 day Bassmaster Classic or a 1 inning baseball game or a 1 hole gold tournament? If its drama you are looking for then skip all of the rest of the fluff and BS that goes along with every single sport and get down to the drama.
How bout for this years classic we give everybody a blindfold and 15 minutes to fish. Best fish wins half a million dollars. NOW THATS DRAMA! If you ask me anyways.

Nascar is nothing special IMO, however it is exactly like every other professional sport being played in this country. The drama lasts about 5 minutes right at the end. So people shouldn't be expecting anything otherwise either. IMO

    Smile

I'll be watching. It's just cause sometimes there's nothing else to do, and it's better than baseball IMO. I won't miss doing something cause a race is on, but if I ain't doing anything Nascar is something to have on, but not like it used to be.

I'm in 2 Nascar Fantasy pools at work too, one is ESPN fantasy and the other is just a pick to win. So I have to keep up with it a little. $$$

I like Baseball way better, just me.

As I've always said. The owner of the Twins (Pohlad) and Royals (David Glass/Walmart Heir) are worth 10x what Steinbrenner ever was. George just put money in his team. Guess I can support a guy like that.

I'm not knocking NASCAR. It just decided Vanilla was the best flavor of racing.

It's just the shootout, he looked good earlier. The R's they turn always amaze me. If the 500 is like this, it'll be nuts!

Kyle ain't lost a thing over the off season...

Nope that move by Kyle on the restart was a move only he could pull off.

I know what your saying about Jr but We all know racing luck plays a huge roll in championships and that scared me. The man has no luck.

Hmmmm, I don't totally agree with you Bob. I thought the shootout was alright.

I am actually interested in the 2 car draft and how it is working. Very cool. Those closing rates that cars can have coming from the back is going to make for excitement. Plus the speeds are making the laps click past pretty darn fast if you ask me.

In all seriousness what can they do that would make it exciting for you? R u one that thinks they should run no plate at all? I am just asking cause I don't know. To me no plate would the bomb but it will never happen and we all know it. So the fact that these cars are now running over 200mph average in the draft is prolly about as much as we can ever hope for in terms of speed. Its pretty obvious nascar has its foot on the panic button just waiting to hit it now with the speeds.

I personally think the cars now are plenty safe enough for the speeds and more. However the tracks are the things falling behind the times. IMO anyways.

To me the fascination with all the aero stuff that is going on out there in the draft this year is enough to keep me interested. However I also enjoy watching F1 and Indy car racing and there is zero passing in most of those races and they are all about aero and engineering.
Personally I'd like to see F1 run an oval race at Daytona now or even the IRL. That would be the chit! 3 wide at oh maybe 250mph or so. Smile

Just wondering what you think they could do to make it less boring Bob?
