First real ride of the seaon!

Hey all,

Well last night we decided to get a small group of guys together and do some riding. I went down early with the chainsaw to try and open up some of the trails so we can go do some looking around. Got a few area's opened up and we were able to get around to most of our areas even if many many many of the trails are impassable at this point. Lots of work needs to be done. Here is a few pics of one area I stopped at before it got dark.

The quicksand is something else in the creeks right now with all this flash flooding and stuff. We buried a junk Rancher to the headlights twice last night and tried to stay out of the creek for the most part. Damn honda's! roll eyes

We had a good time and are going on a ride up the Des Moines river on Sunday. Should be fun.

I wish we would have got some pics of this tunnle that we rode under the 4 lane south of Ft Madison last night. You wouldn't wanna to do if you don't like tight spaces though. :shock: Was cool as hell to ride threw though and seemed like it went on forever.
I left my chainsaw and stuff out on the trail somewhere though so I suppose I'll have to go see if I can locate it today. roll eyes

That looks fun Randy. We have the big ATV park over in Ft Dodge. Last time we were there we got booted cuz Steve was supposed to be on a 90cc or smaller :shock: . Can you imagine that ??? It would look like a monkey :sex: 'n a football. We just dont have much timber close by here in the plains :!dodge:

I have never rode that park in Ft Dodge. We talked about making it a day trip at one point but never did it.

As for the deal with Steve. Yeah that's just stupid. I really do hate it when they put warnings on things like that and the whole age deal. Has nothing to do with age as far as if the kid can handle a particular sized atv. Has everything to do with his riding abilities and brains. If the kid knows what he is doing and is aware of what an atv can do and how you can get in trouble on them then the size of the machine really plays no part. IMO

We are lucky, we have a lot of area to ride. It's a lot to keep up too with trails constantly changing and having to be re worked. To me that's part of the fun though. We prolly maintain around 1000 acres as our normal riding area and it will keep you more than entertained for a weekend. Every thing from trails you could take your grandma's Ford Taurus down to the stuff that only a select few will even think about. affraid

We try and keep them all marked cause at night finding trail heads and stuff can be tough at times. Specially if you don't ride a lot to keep all the growth knocked down.

Once everything is cleaned up and the trails are back in good order I am gonna have a little get together ride down here if anyone wants to come. I know it's a rediculously long trip to ride atv's but I am putting it out there for any of you that would like. I'll post more as we get things cleaned up. It is something else to see on our trails where grass is wrapped around logs that are 16' above your head. Man the water was deep in there at some point. :shock:

You guys gettin the point yet?? I love riding and talking about it almost as much as fishing. Matter of fact I may not go fishing this weekend at all just cause I am going to be sooo busy riding. Well, maybe not. I'll fish Monday. ;)

not to be a smartass but what safety gear do you guys wear when you ride?? I'd assume helmet and goggles?? when I get my atv we can hit the park sometime Kent. looks like a great place to ride Randy.

Good question Mike. Here I go again! lol

Safety gear I classify as much more than a helmet and googles.

When we ride public ground we wear helmets or during the winter cold we always wear helmets for the cold. I am not saying it is smart and I don't recommend it but when we ride our own private ground most of the time we do not wear helmets unless we are going out to just tackle giant hills.

We do use some form of safety glasses or googles. Most for the dust actually.

I like long sleeves when I ride also. I general use the long sleeve motocross style jersey's when it is hot cause they are mostly mess but the keep in the different itch weeds and crap that you will run into on the trail. I also like gloves, unlike when I fish. Gloves are good cause your hands will get tore up all day on the trail plus you may have to get off and use the winch or move trees or whatever. Riding gloves are a must. Again I like the motocross style gloves when it is hot out. Long pants are a must too far as I am concerned. Good waterproof boots are a must also and I actually use hip boots most of the time. You really can get in some deep water and when it is freezing cold out it will make your day a cold one very quickly if your boots are full of water.

As for the machine's safety gear.
Lots of straps, tire slime, I tire patch kit, emergency air pump and a full cooler ;) just in case you get stuck on the trail. ;) I also like a small tree saw and lopping shear for small tree limbs and such. Cell phone isn't a bad one either but make sure you got your waterproof holder. I loose more phones to wheelin than I ever have to the river.

There's lot of things you can get, just like for fishing or any other outdoor sport. You can get as crazy as your pocket book will allow. ;)

I wouldn't mind gettin in on that Ft Dodge ride too if I am not busy and it is on a weekend. Keep that in mind. ;)

There is a real good pond back there too Mike. It used to have lots of crappies at one time. I will smuggle Steve along again , he's pushin 5'10 and we can smear a little filth on him to look like facial hair lol
